Functional fractionation of the stimulus-driven attention network.

چکیده
A novel, salient event in the environment powerfully captures attention. This stimulus-driven attentional capture not only includes orienting of attention toward the event, but also an evaluative process to determine the behavioral significance and appropriate response to the event. Whereas a network of human brain regions composed of prefrontal and temporoparietal regions have been associated with stimulus-driven attention, the neural substrates of orienting have never been teased apart from those of evaluative processes. Here we used fMRI to measure the human brain's response to the temporally extended presentations of salient, task-irrelevant stimuli, and found a clear functional dissociation in the stimulus-driven attention network; the anterior insula and cingulate cortex showed transient orienting responses to the onsets and offsets of the stimuli, whereas the temporoparietal cortex exhibited sustained activity throughout event evaluation. The lateral prefrontal cortex was implicated in both attentional and evaluative processes, pointing to its central, integrative role in stimulus-driven attention.

Stimulus-Driven Reorienting Impairs Executive Control of Attention: Evidence for a Common Bottleneck in Anterior Insula
A classical model of human attention holds that independent neural networks realize stimulus-driven reorienting and executive control of attention. Questioning full independence, the two functions do, however, engage overlapping networks with activations in cingulo-opercular regions such as anterior insula (AI) and a reverse pattern of activation (stimulus-driven reorienting), and deactivation ...
متن کاملAn event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study of voluntary and stimulus-driven orienting of attention.
Attention can be voluntarily directed to a location or automatically summoned to a location by a salient stimulus. We compared the effects of voluntary and stimulus-driven shifts of spatial attention on the blood oxygenation level-dependent signal in humans, using a method that separated preparatory activity related to the initial shift of attention from the subsequent activity caused by target...
متن کاملDissociation of stimulus relevance and saliency factors during shifts of visuospatial attention.
The control of visuospatial attention entails multiple processes, including both voluntary (endogenous) factors and stimulus-driven (exogenous) factors. Exogenous processes can be triggered by visual targets presented at a previously unattended location, thus capturing attention in a stimulus-driven manner. However, little is known about the relative role of stimulus salience and behavioral rel...
متن کاملFunctional connectivity between ventral and dorsal frontoparietal networks underlies stimulus-driven and working memory-driven sources of visual distraction
We investigate the neural basis of two routes to visual distraction: salient stimuli capture attention in a bottom-up fashion and the reappearance of task-irrelevant items that are being actively maintained in working memory can lead to distraction via top-down, but automatic, guidance of attention. Bottom-up, stimulus-driven distraction has typically been associated with a ventral network inco...
متن کاملEffective connectivity during feature-based attentional capture: evidence against the attentional reorienting hypothesis of TPJ.
The most prevalent neurobiological theory of attentional control posits 2 distinct brain networks: The dorsal and ventral attention networks. The role of the dorsal attentional network in top-down attentional control is well established, but there is less evidence for the putative role of the ventral attentional network in initiating stimulus-driven reorienting. Here, we used functional magneti...
